BIS Raids Jewellery Outlet in Amritsar, Seizes 95 Gold Articles Weighing 467.44 Grams

Amritsar, October 23, 2026: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office, has seized 95 gold jewellery articles weighing a total of 467.44 grams during an enforcement operation at a jewellery outlet in Partap Bazar, Chheharta, Amritsar, following suspected violations of mandatory hallmarking requirements.

The search and seizure operation was conducted on October 22 after officials received information regarding possible irregularities in the hallmarking of gold jewellery displayed and offered for sale at the outlet.

According to the reported findings, 91 jewellery articles weighing 447.11 grams carried incomplete or non-prescribed hallmarking. The remaining four articles, weighing 20.33 grams, did not bear the prescribed BIS Hallmark.

Officials found that some of the jewellery items displayed the BIS logo and purity markings, including “916”, but lacked the mandatory Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) or a complete prescribed hallmark. The findings raised concerns about compliance with established standards intended to protect consumers purchasing gold ornaments.
