Food safety action against biscuit companies

FSSAI Takes Legal Action Against Priyagold Biscuit Maker, Dodla Dairy and UEIR Organic Foods
New Delhi, October 17, 2026: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated prosecution proceedings against three food businesses over serious food safety violations, raising concerns about food quality, manufacturing practices and consumer protection in India. The companies facing action are Surya Food & Agro Ltd., the manufacturer of Priyagold biscuits; Dodla Dairy Ltd.; and UEIR Organic Foods Pvt. Ltd.
The action against Surya Food & Agro followed a consumer complaint that prompted an inspection of its manufacturing facility. According to FSSAI, officials found bran intended for cattle feed being used as a source of fibre in Priyagold biscuit production. The bags containing the material were reportedly marked for animal consumption and not human use.
Inspectors also identified deficiencies in plant hygiene, pest control, raw material storage and segregation, staff hygiene, premises maintenance and the handling of intermediate formulations. FSSAI had earlier suspended the manufacturer’s licence following serious non-compliances and has now initiated legal proceedings against the company.
In a separate case, Dodla Dairy came under regulatory scrutiny after a sample of its full cream milk failed to meet prescribed milk-fat standards. Following an appeal by the company, a referral laboratory reportedly confirmed that the sample was unsafe due to the presence of detergent or caustic soda and had milk-fat content below the required minimum. The findings prompted prosecution proceedings under food safety regulations.
FSSAI has also initiated prosecution against UEIR Organic Foods after laboratory testing found pesticide residues exceeding permitted limits in a sample of yellow raisins sold by the company. The regulator classified the sample as unsafe following analysis.
Additionally, the authority issued notices to three other food businesses—Narpadham Foods, Sun Ridges Health Carers and Sha Kantilal Jayantilal—for various alleged hygiene, licensing and compliance deficiencies.
The cases highlight the importance of strict quality control, safe ingredients, proper sanitation and regular inspections throughout the food supply chain. The legal proceedings will determine the consequences under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
FSSAI’s action reinforces the need for food manufacturers to comply with prescribed safety standards and maintain consumer confidence.
