JAMMU, Oct 20: Northern Army Commander stresses constant vigilance, operational synergy and regional outreach; commends troops for professionalism and unwavering commitment Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Indian Army's Northern Command, visited Rashtriya Rifles units in North Kashmir to review their operational preparedness and assess the prevailing security situation, reaffirming the Army's sustained focus vigilance, effective coordination and maintaining peace and stability across Jammu and Kashmir.
During his interaction with commanders and troops deployed on the ground, the Army Commander underscored the critical importance of maintaining constant vigilance, strengthening operational synergy and expanding regional outreach in the hinterland to retain an operational advantage over inimical elements.
He commended the troops for their professionalism, dedication and commitment to duty, appreciating their continued efforts towards maintaining a secure environment and advancing the Indian Army's resolve to work towards a terror-free Jammu and Kashmir.
The visit reflects the Northern Command's continuing emphasis on reviewing ground-level preparedness, assessing emerging security challenges and ensuring that formations remain alert, responsive and operationally ready.
Operational Readiness and Vigilance Remain Paramount North Kashmir occupies a strategically important position in Jammu and Kashmir's security landscape, particularly because of its proximity to the Line of Control (LoC), challenging terrain and the need for sustained surveillance and coordinated security measures. The Army Commander's visit assumes significance in this context, highlighting the importance of continuous assessment of operational readiness and effective coordination among commanders and troops deployed in sensitive areas.
Constant vigilance, timely information-sharing, intelligence-based responses and seamless coordination among security agencies remain important elements of an effective security framework. Lt Gen Sharma's emphasis on operational synergy underlines the importance of a coordinated approach to addressing evolving security challenges. His interaction with personnel on the ground also reinforces the importance of leadership engagement, troop morale, professional excellence and preparedness at every level of the operational chain.
Regional Outreach and People-Centric Engagement Alongside operational preparedness, the emphasis on regional outreach in the hinterland highlights the importance of maintaining engagement with local communities and strengthening public confidence. In a region where security, stability and normalcy are closely connected, constructive engagement with residents can support the flow of credible information, help address local concerns and reinforce cooperation between security forces and the civilian population.
The Army's broader engagement with local communities, including initiatives aimed at youth participation, welfare and development, has also formed part of its activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Such engagement complements security efforts by encouraging trust, strengthening social connections and contributing to an environment conducive to lasting peace.
A Commander with Extensive Operational Experience Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma assumed command of the Northern Command on May 1, 2025. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla; the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun; and the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, he was commissioned into the Madras Regiment in December 1987. Over a distinguished military career, he has commanded an infantry battalion, a brigade and a division along the Line of Control, besides commanding a Strike Corps in the Western Sector. His professional experience also includes staff and instructional appointments, service as a staff officer in a United Nations mission, and important assignments at the Army Headquarters' Military Operations Directorate and Military Secretary Branch.
Before assuming command of the Northern Command, Lt Gen Sharma served as Director General of Military Operations and Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy)-appointments that provided him with extensive exposure to operational planning, strategic decision-making and the assessment of complex security challenges. His professional background brings considerable operational and strategic experience to the leadership of a command responsible for critical border and counter-terrorism responsibilities.
Sustained Focus on Peace and Security Across Jammu and Kashmir The latest visit to North Kashmir follows other reported engagements by Lt Gen Sharma across strategically significant areas of Jammu and Kashmir. In March 2026, he visited a forward post in Rajouri district to review operational preparedness following the foiling of an infiltration attempt in the Nowshera sector. In May 2026, he also visited forward areas in Poonch and reviewed counter-terrorism preparedness and coordination in the Pir Panjal region. These engagements underline the continuing importance of ground-level assessments, operational coordination and vigilance across the diverse security environments of the Union Territory.
From the LoC to the hinterland, the Army's responsibilities require sustained readiness, professional discipline and the ability to respond to changing circumstances.
