Major development projects announced for Ladakh

PM Modi Inaugurates Development Projects Worth ₹3,350 Crore in Ladakh
Leh, Ladakh | October 15, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated and dedicated five major development initiatives worth approximately ₹3,350 crore in the Union Territory of Ladakh through video conferencing. The projects focus on improving connectivity, strengthening electricity infrastructure, conserving ancient cultural heritage and enhancing water security across the strategically important Himalayan region.
The projects are expected to improve transport facilities, support local livelihoods, strengthen infrastructure in remote communities and create new opportunities for tourism and economic development.
New Passenger Terminal at Leh Airport
One of the major highlights is the new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, constructed at a cost of approximately ₹640 crore. Spread across 23,800 square metres, the modern facility is designed to accommodate up to 35 lakh passengers annually.
The terminal incorporates geothermal technology and solar energy to improve energy efficiency and reduce its environmental footprint. Its design also reflects Ladakh’s cultural identity while providing improved facilities for travellers.
The expanded infrastructure is expected to support rising passenger traffic, improve the airport experience and strengthen air connectivity between Ladakh and other parts of the country.
Nimmu–Padum–Darcha Road Strengthens Connectivity
Another significant project is the 298-kilometre Nimmu–Padum–Darcha Road, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Connecting Nimmu in Leh with Darcha in Himachal Pradesh through the Zanskar Valley, the road provides an alternative connectivity corridor alongside the Srinagar–Leh and Manali–Leh highways.
The route is strategically important because it can strengthen logistical movement for the Armed Forces while improving access to healthcare, education, markets and essential services for residents of remote areas. The road crosses challenging Himalayan terrain, including the high-altitude Shinkun La Pass.
Hydropower and Electricity Infrastructure
The Prime Minister also inaugurated the 9-megawatt Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and the 66-kilovolt double-circuit Dah–Hanu–Khaltsi transmission line.
These facilities are intended to strengthen power transmission infrastructure, improve electricity network reliability and support the utilisation of Ladakh’s hydropower potential. Reliable electricity is particularly important in the region, where extreme temperatures and remote settlements create additional infrastructure challenges.
