Major Landslide in Uri Blocks National Highway; 40–50 Villages Face Power Outage

Uri, Jammu and Kashmir | October 15, 2026

A massive landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has blocked the National Highway near Rajerwani in the Uri subdivision of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, disrupting vehicular movement and creating serious concerns for commuters. The incident occurred near ADIT-4, close to NHPC Uri-I, where large quantities of soil, rocks and debris fell onto the road.

According to local media reports, the situation remains dangerous as stones continue to fall from the hillside, making clearance operations challenging. Authorities have advised commuters to avoid the affected stretch until the debris is removed and the road is declared safe for traffic.

Alternative Route Advised for Commuters

To minimise inconvenience and ensure public safety, commuters have been advised to use the alternative route via Gingle–Dawaran–Paranpillan–Bandi–Uri. Travellers have been urged to follow traffic advisories and avoid attempting to cross the blocked section.

The continuous rainfall and falling rocks have complicated restoration efforts, particularly during nighttime hours. Officials are assessing the situation and working to determine the requirements for safely restoring vehicular movement. Commuters are advised to confirm the latest road status with traffic authorities before beginning their journeys.

Power Supply Disrupted in 40–50 Villages

The landslide has also damaged a major 33-kilovolt electricity transmission line, leaving approximately 40–50 villages in the Uri area without electricity, according to local reports.

Officials from the Power Development Department have indicated that the ongoing rainfall and the risk of falling stones are making it difficult for repair teams to reach the affected location safely. The Bandi and Salamabad feeders are among those reported to be affected.

Restoration work is expected to be taken up on priority once weather conditions improve and the affected area becomes safe for personnel and machinery. The power disruption has caused inconvenience to residents, who are awaiting the restoration of normal electricity services.

Residents Seek Immediate Action

The incident has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of mountain roads during periods of heavy rainfall. The road near NS Bridge has also drawn attention because of road-widening work and the risks associated with loose soil, slippery surfaces and unstable slopes.

Local residents have urged the administration and concerned departments to strengthen monitoring of vulnerable locations, improve safety measures and expedite the restoration of road and electricity connectivity.

Authorities have advised the public to remain alert, follow official instructions and avoid the affected stretch until further notice. Travellers should also be cautious while using alternative routes because wet road surfaces and poor weather can increase the risk of accidents.

The immediate priorities remain ensuring public safety, clearing the accumulated debris and restoring essential services to affected communities. Further updates on road clearance and electricity restoration are awaited.
