Mughal Road Temporarily Closed After Fresh Snowfall in Higher Reaches of Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir | October 15, 2026

Fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir has reportedly led to the temporary closure of the Mughal Road, disrupting movement along one of the region’s important mountain routes. The closure has raised concerns among commuters, transport operators and residents who rely on the road for travel between the Jammu region and south Kashmir.

The Mughal Road, which connects the Poonch and Rajouri districts with the Shopian district of Kashmir, passes through the mountainous Pir Panjal range. The route is particularly vulnerable to sudden changes in weather during autumn and winter, when snowfall, rainfall, slippery surfaces and reduced visibility can make driving hazardous.

Snowfall Creates Difficult Travel Conditions

The latest snowfall in elevated areas has increased the risk of unsafe driving conditions along the route. Snow accumulation on the road surface, combined with low temperatures and the possibility of ice formation, can make it difficult for vehicles to maintain traction.

Mountain roads also present additional challenges because of steep gradients, sharp bends and exposed stretches. Even a relatively small amount of snow can create dangerous conditions for passenger vehicles, goods carriers and other traffic.

Authorities generally restrict movement on vulnerable stretches when weather conditions threaten the safety of road users. Such precautionary closures help prevent vehicles from becoming stranded and allow officials to assess road conditions before permitting traffic to resume.

Connectivity Between Jammu and Kashmir Affected

The Mughal Road serves as an important alternative to the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, particularly for travellers moving between the Poonch-Rajouri region and south Kashmir. It also supports local trade, tourism and the movement of essential supplies.

A temporary closure can inconvenience commuters and affect transport schedules, especially for people travelling long distances. Drivers may need to postpone their journeys or use alternative routes, depending on official traffic advisories and the prevailing road conditions.

The route is also popular among tourists because of its scenic mountain landscapes and views of the Pir Panjal range. However, changing weather during the colder months can make travel unpredictable, requiring visitors to plan their journeys carefully.
