JAMMU, October 20: National Conference (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday visited the family of senior party leader and former cabinet minister Sardar Harbans Singh at his residence in Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, to offer condolences following his demise.

Farooq Abdullah arrived in Jammu from Srinagar and spent time with the bereaved family, expressing his heartfelt sympathies and sharing their grief over the loss of the veteran political leader. The visit reflected the National Conference leadership’s solidarity with the family during this difficult period.

Sardar Harbans Singh, aged 84, passed away on October 12 at a private hospital in Jammu, where he had been undergoing treatment after remaining unwell for some time.

Singh was a senior member of the National Conference and had maintained a long association with the party and public life in Jammu and Kashmir. He was also serving as political adviser to Farooq Abdullah, a responsibility he was assigned in December 2025.

Distinguished Political Career

Harbans Singh served as a cabinet minister in the government headed by Farooq Abdullah between 1996 and 2002. During his political career, he contributed to the functioning of the party and worked in various capacities, earning recognition among party members and political colleagues.

His passing has been described by National Conference leaders as a significant loss to the organisation and the people of Jammu. Party leaders have recalled his commitment to public service and his long-standing contribution to political and social affairs in the region.

Singh’s association with the National Conference extended beyond his ministerial tenure. His appointment as political adviser to the party president in December 2025 reflected his continued involvement in the organisation’s activities and leadership.

Leaders Pay Tribute

Earlier, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and NC provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta had visited Singh’s residence on October 12 to express their condolences. They subsequently attended his last rites at the Shastri Nagar cremation ground in Jammu.

Leaders and representatives from different political parties also joined mourners to pay their final respects to the former minister, reflecting the regard he commanded across sections of public life.

The National Conference has expressed profound grief over his demise and offered prayers for eternal peace for the departed soul. The party leadership has also extended its sympathies to the family, wishing them strength and courage to bear the loss.

A Loss for the National Conference

Harbans Singh’s death marks the end of a long chapter in his association with the National Conference and the political life of Jammu and Kashmir. His years of service as a minister and senior party functionary remain an important part of his public record.

Farooq Abdullah’s visit on Tuesday reaffirmed the party leadership’s support for the bereaved family and provided an opportunity to remember the veteran leader’s contributions to the organisation and the region.

Singh is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
