PM Modi Inaugurates RBI Data Centre in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, October 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) newly established Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The two facilities, developed at an investment of ₹169 crore, are expected to strengthen India’s digital financial infrastructure and improve cybersecurity capabilities in the banking sector.
The inauguration marks an important step towards building a secure, reliable and technology-driven financial system as digital banking and online transactions continue to expand across the country.
State-of-the-Art Digital Infrastructure
The RBI facility is spread across 18.55 acres at Info Valley-II in Jatni, near Bhubaneswar. The foundation stone was laid by former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on March 22, 2023.
According to official information, the data centre will host mission-critical payment and settlement systems, along with other important technological initiatives of the central bank. The facility is designed to provide a secure, resilient and scalable computing environment to support the growing technological requirements of India’s financial sector.
The infrastructure is expected to improve the reliability and efficiency of digital financial services and support the smooth functioning of essential banking systems.
Focus on Cybersecurity and Emerging Technologies
Alongside the data centre, the newly inaugurated Cybersecurity Training Institute will focus on specialised training, research and capacity building in cybersecurity and enterprise technology.
The institute is expected to help develop skilled professionals capable of addressing emerging digital threats. Its broader areas of focus include advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, which are becoming increasingly relevant to the financial services industry.
As cyberattacks and digital fraud continue to pose challenges to financial institutions, stronger security systems and specialised training are considered essential for protecting sensitive information and maintaining public confidence in digital banking.
PM Modi Highlights Financial Security
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the importance of safeguarding India’s banking system against cybercriminals and cyberterrorists. He noted that modern threats can target a nation’s economy and financial institutions, making robust digital infrastructure and trained personnel increasingly important.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the transformation of India’s banking sector, stressing that the next phase of development should focus on making banking services more efficient, reliable and accessible.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, Odisha Governor Brajmohan Ram and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi were among the dignitaries present at the event.
Boost for Odisha’s Development
The project is also expected to strengthen Odisha’s position as an emerging destination for technology-driven investment. The development reflects growing efforts to expand advanced digital infrastructure beyond major metropolitan centres.
With the inauguration of the two facilities, the RBI aims to reinforce the technological foundation supporting India’s financial system while improving preparedness against evolving cyber risks.
