Supreme Court Collegium Recommends 9 Advocates as Judges of J&K and Ladakh High Court

Jammu, October 29: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended nine advocates for appointment as judges of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, marking an important development in the judicial appointment process in the Union Territories.

The decision was taken at a Collegium meeting held on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The recommendations include legal professionals from different parts of the region and are expected to support the functioning of the High Court.

According to reports published by Daily Excelsior and Kashmir Life, the nine advocates recommended for elevation are Vishal Sharma, Vikram Kumar Sharma, Namgyal Wangchuk, Pawan Kumar Kundal, Tahir Majid Shamsi, Tabasum Zafar, Amit Gupta, Pranav Kohli and Anupam Raina.

Nine Advocates Recommended

The recommended names are:

  1. Vishal Sharma
  2. Vikram Kumar Sharma
  3. Namgyal Wangchuk
  4. Pawan Kumar Kundal
  5. Tahir Majid Shamsi
  6. Tabasum Zafar
  7. Amit Gupta
  8. Pranav Kohli
  9. Anupam Raina

The recommendations form part of the process for filling judicial vacancies and strengthening the High Court’s capacity to deal with cases.

Appointment Process Yet to Be Completed

The Collegium’s recommendation is an important stage in the appointment process, but it does not mean that the advocates have already assumed office as judges. The recommendations must proceed through the remaining constitutional and administrative formalities before formal appointments are notified.

The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh deals with a wide range of matters, including civil disputes, criminal cases, constitutional questions and public interest litigation. Strengthening its judicial capacity is important for the timely disposal of cases and the effective administration of justice.

The latest recommendations have drawn attention from the legal community across Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, particularly because of the number of advocates proposed for elevation in a single exercise.

Further developments are expected once the appointment process advances and the formal notifications are issued.
